6th Annual Joy to be Bald

6th Annual Joy to be Bald Fundraiser

The 6th Annual “Joy to be Bald” Fundraiser will be held Sunday, October 4, 2:00 to 6:00pm, beginning at Lori’s Café, 504 Belfast-Augusta Road, Liberty with a walk-a-thon, then continuing with more events at the Liberty Community Hall at 14 Junk Avenue, Liberty.

What began in 2010 as a dare between Café owner, Lori Mayer, and a patron who offered to donate money to a mutual friend if Mayer agreed to shave her head; has grown into an annual event to offer financial assistance to local people battling cancer. The event still bears the name of the original recipient and dear friend, Joy Mehuren, who succumbed in Lung Cancer in 2011.

Using a core of committed volunteers and the generosity of the community at large, all items are donated and 100% of proceeds are disbursed locally.

The event features something for everyone. Starting off with a 2.2 Mile fundraising walk-a-thon from Lori’s Café, past JOY Lane to The Tower; and at the Liberty Community Hall there will be a Silent Auction, a chicken BBQ courtesy of Liberty Fire Department, a Bounce House, Face Painting, all topped off with a Head Shaving event.

The event has grown large enough so that again this year the funds will benefit two recipients –  Tammy Leeman Shaw and April Moulton.

Lori Mayer can be reached at Lori’s Café, 504 Belfast-Augusta Road in Liberty. She can be reached via telephone at 207-589-4141 or email lorim63@live.com. Further information on the event can be found on Facebook at www.facebook.com/joytobebald.
